Feed the Future Inova Business Cases
The USAID Mozambique Feed the Future Agricultural Innovations Activity (FTF Inova) is a five-year (2017- 2022) project that takes a market systems development approach to agriculture-led economic growth in Mozambique.
FTF Inova, implemented by DAI in partnership with MSA, developed the six business cases below to offer tangible proof that enterprises can profit from investing in addressing challenges experienced by smallholder farmers. The business cases cover three themes:
-
Miruku Business Case
FTF Inova supported Miruku to develop and implement a transparent performance management mechanism using Supplier Clubs to increase farmer quality production, trust and loyalty, and reduce side-selling. As a result, Inova and Miruku have improved farmers’ formal and guaranteed commercial relationships with buyers; increased access to higher quality inputs and technical assistance; and strengthened cooperation and reputation within their communities.
Export Marketing Company (ETG)Business Case
FTF Inova worked in partnership with Export Marketing Company (ETG) to co-invest in increasing the quantity and quality of cashew nut production by organizing producers into Supplier Clubs and facilitating access to spraying services. As a result, Inova and ETG have increased the number of producer customers for spray service providers (SSPs) and aggregators; generated additional payment for SSPs from their new role as ETG’s buyer/aggregator; and increased recognition of the quality of the spray service provided.
Ka Da Terra Business Case
FTF Inova worked in partnership with Ka Da Terra to co-invest in developing the local supply chain and creating some commercial connections between producers, aggregators and large-scale retailers. As a result, Inova and Ka Da Terra have provided higher-value market access for smallholder farmers; generated new commercial relationships; and increased access to locally produced products.
-
Klein Karoo (K2) Village Based Agents Pre-Order System Business Case
FTF Inova worked in partnership with Klein Karoo (K2) to co-invest in establishing a pre-ordering system via the Village Based Agent (VBA) micro-distribution model. As a result, Inova and K2 increased agrodealers’ last mile market presence with smallholder farmers; increased supply and business from input suppliers; as well as improved customer-centricity, and therefore, more sustainable demand.
Rota Certa CdA Inputs Distribution Business Case
FTF Inova worked in partnership with CdA to co-invest in establishing the regular and pre-order inputs distribution model – Rota Certa. As a result, Inova and CdA have increased agrodealers’ ease of access to high quality supplies for their stores, as well as increased the variety of products and their ability to offer better service/products to farmers. The model also helped to ensure good communication with the supplier, access to ordering and, in some cases, the possibility of buying on credit.
-
UniLúrio Business School (UBS) Interns’ Program Business Case
FTF Inova worked in partnership with the UniLúrio Business School (UBS) to co-invest in support universities to establish more linkages with agriculture actors to deliver junior consultancy services through internships. As a result, Inova and UBS generated improvement in marketing and financial organization for agrodealers; increased sales and enhanced insertion of young people in the agricultural market.
